Joseph and Emma lived here for about a year. It was here that that in the middle of the night, about 30 men pulled Joseph from his bed and Oliver Cowdrey from his sleeping place, Oliver was staying across the street from the Johnson farm. The mob tarred and feathered them. They broke out one of Joseph’s front teeth while trying to poison him. This raid caused one of the twins recovering from the measles, Joseph and Emma had adopted, to die from exposure. Four of the first five children of Emma and Joseph died before the age of two. It was here that Joseph and Oliver Cowdrey received the 76th section of the Doctrine and Covenants. Joseph would see a part of the vision and Oliver would say, “I see it to”, and then described it for the others in the room. Then Oliver would see the next part of the vision, and Joseph would say, “I see it to”, and describe what he was seeing for the others. President Ballard, President Nelson and his daughter, Sister Irion May 9 th , 2018 Wednesday, May 09, 2018, we were called to the temple to a special missionary meeting this morning. There was a bit of mystic about it because no details were announced except that we should wear our Sunday clothes, be there at 10:45 and meet in the assembly room. When we went into the assembly room the first two rows were reserved for a lot of visitors. We were beginning to suspect that President Nelson was going to speak to us. His daughter, Gloria, is our temple matron. We were in our seats a little bit early and Sister Blood played a beautiful prelude. The spirit was so strong I could hardly breathe. 10:45 came and went and nothing happened. We continued to wait and ponder the significance of that beautiful room with its four levels of pulpits on each end of the room. I was imagining what it was like to be in the Kirkland temple the da...
Some of the more interesting people we met in Nauvoo were Brother and Sister Tukuafu. They live in a yurt which they built themselves on the shore of the Mississippi River. Brother Tukuafu was born in Tonga and Sister Tukuafu has adopted the Polynesian culture to the extent that about the only thing about her that is not Polynesian is the color of her skin. They are very talented in music and the arts and they love people and enjoy sharing those talents with everyone. Rather than doing a program for everyone at the same time in the Visitor's Center where they have to transport all their instruments, they prefer inviting people to their home for family home evenings. They are both ordinance workers in the temple and attended the Nauvoo 1st ward. The Tukuafu Yurt in Nauvoo They drove a white van that had brightly colored flowers and words like "Happy" or "Love" painted on it. The view from their front porch The loft is su...
